"Opened to traffic and fanfare in 1960, this 4-lane, 2-way, 2-level design with an interior once entirely lined in sparkling white ceramic tile, provides the infamous ‘entrance’ to Pittsburgh as motorists emerge from Mount Washington to the now Pittsburgh Renaissance Historic District. Brushed steel letters announce a vital link between the City and suburbs, the project reflecting the region’s period of modernization. Architect Joseph Felix Bontempo with design engineer Michael Baker Junior incorporated a rose granite outline on the façade, inspiring the color of this composition depicting the east-bound portal. The unique tunnel interior underwent renovations in 2015-16 related to safety updates."
